How to Ace the Interview

  • Read up on the lab in more detail prior to meeting with the lab member (PI, grad student, etc.). Looking at their website is a good place to start, but look at a few of the lab's most recent publications as well.

  • Freshen up on some details from relevant technical classes. Interviewers won’t expect you to know everything in depth, but it can be helpful to be familiar with relevant terms.

  • Don’t be nervous about not knowing something! Being personable, remaining calm, and asking questions is often much more important in an interview setting than all the facts that you are able to regurgitate.

  • Come prepared with questions to ask after the interview about the lab's research or logistics (e.g. expected time commitment, available projects, etc.).

  • Consider doing a mock interview with the Career Center @ Engineering.

  • Dress to impress - wear what you would for any professional interview (e.g. slacks, button up/blouse, blazer).

  • Follow up with a thank you email! Remind them of your interest in the position and thank the interviewer for taking the time to meet with you.
